    THE HALFWAY GROUND (2007)
What do you call it when Atwater~Donnelly and five remarkable friends get together to play great old-time gospel? You call it Jerimoth Hill after the highest point in little Rhode Island, home of Elwood Donnelly and his wife Aubrey Atwater. With this, their tenth recording, Aubrey on mountain dulcimer, banjo and mandolin, and Elwood on lead vocals and guitar are joined by Cathy Clasper-Torch, fiddle and cello; Heidi Cerrigione, autoharp; John Cerrigione, bass; Uriah Donnelly, piano and lead guitar; and Kevin Doyle, percussion.

With The Halfway Ground, Elwood Donnelly — of Atwater~Donnelly — presents his long-awaited gospel album. This endeavor summarizes years of research throughout those hidden pockets of America where music, as an integral part of daily life, weaves an emotional thread through work and play, commitment and faith, endurance and hope, struggle and peace. The Halfway Ground, where the hereafter is ever-present in conversation and song, and greener pastures are a simple assurance.

The result is the glorious five-part harmony of Jerimoth Hill. So, breathe deeply as these songs meander their way through your discerning ear and into your heart to meet your spirit on The Halfway Ground.

Alle-luia, Alle-luia Alle, Alle, Alle-luia Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound, That saved a soul, a soul like me I once was lost but now am found, Was blind, so blind, but now, I see. T'was Grace that taught my heart to fear. And Grace, oh Grace, my fears relieved. How precious did that Grace appear... The hour I first, I first believed. Through many dangers, toils and snares We have, we have already come. T'was Grace that brought us safe thus far And Grace, oh grace will lead us home. The Lord has promised good to me His word my hope, my hope secures. He will my shield and portion be As long as life, as life endures. Yea, when this flesh and heart shall fail, And mortal life, this life shall cease, I shall possess, within the veil, A life of joy, of joy and peace. The world shall soon dissolve like snow, The sun, the sun refuse to shine; But God, who called me here below, Shall be, shall be forever mine. When we've been here ten thousand years Bright shining, shining as the sun. We've no less days to sing God's praise Then when we first, we first begun. Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound, That saved a soul, a soul like me I once was lost but now am found, Was blind, so blind, but now, I see. Alle-luia, Alle-luia Alle, Alle, Alle-luia

To the River of Jordan our Savior went one day And we read that John the Baptist met Him there When John baptized Jesus in Jordan's rushing water The mighty power of God filled the air. I'm on my way (to the river of Jordan) Gonna walk right in (in the rushing waters) I'm going there (I'm going down) to the river of Jordan And let the cool waters cleanse my soul. King Naiman was stricken with dreaded leprosy And he sent for the man of God to pray But Elisha said to Naiman, go dip yourself in Jordan And let the cool water wash your spots away. So he went right down (to the River Of Jordan) He went right in (in the rushing water) He dipped himself (he dipped himself) in the river of Jordan And the cool waters made him whole. Instrumental Now, the river of Jordan is many miles away This mighty river I may never see But I'll find myself an alter in an old fashioned church My river of Jordan that will be I'm going down (to the river of Jordan) Gonna walk right in (to the rushing waters) Gonna dip myself (gonna dip myself) in the river of Jordan And let the cool waters cleanse my soul. I'm on my way (to the river of Jordan) Gonna walk right in (in the rushing waters) I'm going there (I'm going down) to the river of Jordan And let the cool waters cleanse my soul.

Oft I sing for my friends, When death's cold form I see When I reach my journey's end Tell me who will sing for me Chorus: I wonder (I wonder who) who Will sing (will sing for me) for me When I come to the cross by the silent sea, Tell me who will sing for me Instrumental When friends have gathered 'round And look down on me Will they turn and walk away Or will they sing one song for me...Chorus Instrumental So I'll sing until the end And helpful try to be Ever knowing there'll be some Who will sing one song for me...Chorus 2X
9.
We are going down the valley one by one With our faces toward the setting of the sun Down in the valley where the mournful cypress grows Where the streams of death in silence onward flows Chorus: We are going down the valley Going down the valley Going toward the setting of the sun We are going down the valley Going down the valley We are going down the valley one by one We are going down the valley one by one Human comrades, you and I will ne'er have none But we will meet with rapture in the sky We will all be changed, but some will never die...Chorus We are going down the valley one by one Yet before the shadowed veil will come the dawn, And a gentle hand will lead us lest we fall, Christ is going down the valley with us all...Chorus We are going down the valley one by one When the labors of this weary world is done; When the labors of this weary world is past We shall stand upon the river bank at last...Chorus Instrumental We are going down the valley one by one As the Blessed Father stands before His Son; In sacramental vestige angels sing Sounds of joy, of peace, of hope, around us ring...Chorus We are going down the valley one by one

God has given us years of happiness here Now we must part And as the angels come and call for you The pangs of grief tug at my heart Chorus: Oh, my darlin’ My darlin’ My heart breaks as you take your lone journey Oh the days will be empty, the nights so long Without you my love And as God calls for you, I’m left alone But we will meet in heaven above...Chorus Instrumental Fond memories I’ll keep of those happy days That on Earth we trod And when I come, we will walk hand in hand As one in heaven, in the family of God...Chorus
11.
Chorus: Sow 'em on the mountain, reap 'em in the valley Sow 'em on the mountain, reap 'em in the valley Sow 'em on the mountain, reap 'em in the valley 'Cause you're gonna reap what you sow If you been a gambler, you better quit your gambling If you been a gambler, you better quit your gambling If you been a gambler, you better quit your gambling 'Cause you're gonna reap what you sow...Chorus If you been a tattler, you better quit your tattling If you been a tattler, you better quit your tattling If you been a tattler, you better quit your tattling 'Cause you're gonna reap what you sow...Chorus If you been a liar, you better quit your lying If you been a liar, you better quit your lying If you been a liar, you better quit your lying 'Cause you're gonna reap what you sow...Chorus Instrumental

Friends, now our meeting is over And surely we must part But if I never any more see you I will love you in my heart. Lord, we’ll sail on the sea And we’ll land on the shore Oh we’ll land on the shore And we’ll sing forever more Brothers, now our meeting is over And surely we must part But if I never any more see you I will love you in my heart. Lord, we’ll sail on the sea And we’ll land on the shore Oh we’ll land on the shore And we’ll shout forever more Sisters, now our meeting is over And surely we must part But if I never any more see you I will love you in my heart. Lord, we’ll sail on the sea And we’ll land on the shore Oh we’ll land on the shore And we’ll pray forever more Instrumental
