    THE BLACKEST CROW (2004)
The Blackest Crow is a treasury of traditional American and Celtic folk songs, as well as original pieces. Enjoy their resplendent vocals and thoughtful presentation, played on guitar, mountain dulcimer, old-time banjo, tin whistle, mandolin, fiddle, piano, harmonica, bones, bodhran, wooden spoons, and feet.

In their ongoing quest as gatekeepers of traditional folk music and dance, Aubrey and Elwood treat their life's work as a rescue mission: finding old songs, writing new songs, and as always, giving voice to the quiet. The songs were collected during many years of performing throughout Appalachia, as well as other places in the United States where traditional folk music still melds with daily life.

about

Single Girl, Married Girl
Sara Carter had learned this song from a friend in Russell County, Virginia, in 1905. It was recorded thrice, for their very first recording session on August 2, 1927, in Bristol Tennessee, secondly and thirdly on May 8, 1936 and June 10, 1936, in New York City. In 1927,
Sara’s been married to A.P. Carter for 12 years now, is a mother (of the
young Janette) and she knows what she’s singing about, but the song, a cautionary tale, warning of the different lives of the single and the married girl, keep some of its mocking humor. By 1936, as Sara and A.P. Carter’s wedding is dissolving, the tempo has slowed down; Sara’s voice has evolved to a deeper and lower tone, and you can feel the tiredness and the bitterness in her new rendition.

lyrics

Single girl, single girl, she's going dressed so fine
Oh, she's going dressed so fine
Married girl, married girl, she wears just any kind
Oh, she wears just any kind

Single girl, single girl, she goes to the store and buys
Oh, she goes to the store and buys
Married girl, married girl, she rocks the cradle and cries
Oh, she rocks the cradle and cries

Instrumental

Single girl, single girl, she's going where she please
Oh, she's going where she please
Married girl, married girl, a baby on her knees
Oh, a baby on her knees
